Our new science topic, living things and their habitats, involves looking at classifying animals. In week one, we found out that in 1735 Carl Linnaeus published a system for classifying all living things called the Linnaeus system. Followed by week two, where we discovered that vertebrates are animals that have a backbone. Vertebrates can be divided into five groups: Mammals, Birds, Amphibians and Fish. We made posters to show what this means.

In science this week, we have been looking at inherited genes and how offspring look similar but not identical to their parents. We had fun creating our own Mr. Men/ Little Miss characters, depending on what they had inherited from their parents.

In PSHE, we have been looking at defining the word 'attraction'. We made posters supporting diversity and how important it is to be welcoming. As a school community, we chose the words safe, proud and free to express who you were as a person.

This week in Topaz, the children have been learning about Evolution and Adaptation. After exploring who Charles Darwin was and understanding the meanings of these key terms, they discussed how living things change over many generations to survive more successfully in their environments. The class looked at examples such as polar bears developing thick fur for warmth and giraffes having long necks to reach tall trees, helping them to see how adaptations support survival.
