On your daily exercise today explain to your child that they are going to be the walk leader. They are going to direct everyone from home to (local place) school/park/shop using their new direction skills.
Make your child feel excited and important by allowing them to show you the way (if safe to do so) to your chosen location. If they get it wrong, as long as it doesn’t take you too far out of your way, allow them to work it out instead of correcting them.
Ensure their direction instructions are clear and respond to what they say rather than what you think they mean, this will encourage them to really think about the language they are using.
- Draw a map of your walk, either during the walk if you want to take a piece of paper and pencil with you or have a go at remembering the route when back home.
- You could even use an online map website to show your child the route you took.
