What has happened in the story so far?

 

Read pages 45-58 – Michael is shipwrecked

 

Look at descriptions of the jungle (pages 50 and 58)

How does Morpurgo create an image of the jungle at night? Why is the language effective? What can Michael hear in the jungle?

 

Look at:

powerful verbs (whirred, whined, droned)

Small details to bring the scene to life (woodpecker, mosquitos whining in his ears)

Metaphor (orchestra of the jungle)

Alliteration (whirred and whined; scraping, scratching; grunting, grating

 

What do you think a mellifluous evensong is?  Do you think this is a good phrase to describe the jungle at night?
