Message from Mrs Birch

Mrs Birch
Mrs Birch - Headteacher

On Wednesday, we had a fantastic training day with our chosen phonics scheme, Supersonic Phonic Friends (Home - Supersonic Phonic Friends). Phonics is the approach to teaching children to read and write by teaching them to match sounds with the appropriate alphabetic code. All of our children, from Nursery to Year 2 are on their phonics journey and follow this scheme, as well as some of our Key Stage Two children. It was fantastic for us all to hear the most recent developments and think about how we can use these to best support our children. If you are interested to hear more about our approaches to phonics, we do have an open morning taking place on Friday 24th October at 9am (further details to follow).

Allergy Awareness

Just a reminder that as a school, we do have to remain allergy aware. It is essential that we safeguard all of our children, including those with food allergies. We request that no nuts / nut containing products are sent into school in packed lunches or as snacks – this includes spreads such as Nutella and peanut butter.

We know that some parents choose to bring in a treat for their child’s classmates when it is their child’s birthday. There is absolutely no expectation for you to do this. If you choose to, please ensure that you only send shop brought opens that are in their original packaging so any allergens can be carefully checked. Many thanks for your support with this.

Curriculum Information

Over the last couple of weeks, all year groups have held Welcome Meetings and Autumn term ‘Curriculum Overviews’ for the relevant year have been sent to all parents. If you ever wish to learn more about our curriculum in any subject, we have a wealth of information on our website: Galley Hill Primary School and Nursery - Curriculum. If you cannot find what you are looking for, please speak to your child’s class teacher and they should be able to share additional details with you.

Home Learning

By today, all children will have received their first reading book for this year (or a book to share at home in the Early Years) and will have had their first home learning tasks set. Our Home Learning Policy, which outlines the expectations for your child, can be found on our website: Home Learning Policy. We very much appreciate your support in ensuring that your child completes their home learning as this prepares them well for the future and because the tasks set complement our wider curriculum and the development of basic skills. From Year 3, children whose home learning has not been completed by Thursday will miss some of their break or lunch time in order to do so.

World Mental Health Day

On Friday 10th October Galley Hill will be participating in World Mental Health Day, by holding class assemblies, discussions and completing a range of activities. We will also be raising awareness by joining in with YoungMinds' Hello Yellow Campaign. We are therefore inviting each child to come into school on that day wearing something yellow, on top of their usual school uniform, e.g. a pair of socks, a scarf, hairband, jumper etc. Staff will be getting involved as well!

If you would like further support with your child's mental health, or your own, please do look at the wellbeing page on our website for a range of resources and helpful websites. You can also read our parent guide here PowerPoint Presentation, speak to your child's class teacher, or Mrs Reynolds our Mental Health Lead, if you have any concerns.
