Message from Mrs Birch

Mrs Birch
Mrs Birch - Headteacher

As we anticipated, we could not be prouder of our children from Year 6 who have been taking their SATs this week. All of the children faced each day with resilience and a sense of calm and really impressed all of the staff involved. Well done Team Year 6! Thank you to our colleagues from Herts Catering Ltd who supported us by opening the kitchen early to make bacon and sausage sandwiches each day.

Away from SATs, Mrs Pritchett and I spent some time this week looking at children’s Science learning in books and through conversations with them. We were blown away by the children’s enthusiasm for the subject, obvious curiosity and use of scientific vocabulary. We clearly have a school of budding young scientists.

This will be our last newsletter before the half term holiday. A reminder that next Friday (22nd May) is an inset day. We hope all of our families have a lovely break and we look forward to seeing all of the children back in school on Monday 1st June.

Staff News

We have a host of exciting staff news to share with you this week!

I am delighted to share with you that Miss Lewis gave birth to a baby girl last week. I am sure you will all join me in congratulating her and her husband. In further brilliant baby news, we are sure many of you will have noticed that Miss Carden is expecting her second child. She will be in class with Team Sapphire until the end of the academic year before starting her maternity leave ahead of September.

As we plan for the absence of both of these teachers, we are thrilled to have appointed two new teachers ready for September, who are very well known to our school. Miss Reardon will be staying with us as a permanent full time teacher in September and we will also be welcoming Mrs Nash back to Galley Hill, after her completing a training placement with us in the Spring term.

Finally, we are very excited that Miss Featherstone is getting married during half term. I am sure you will all want to join me in wishing her the very best for a fantastic wedding day. We look forward to welcoming Mrs Angus back to school after the holiday.

Statutory Assessments

While Year 6 SATs are now complete, we do have other statutory assessments coming up in the weeks after half term. During the week beginning Monday 8th June, our children in Year 1 will be completing their Phonics Screener and children in Year 4 will be

completing their Multiplication Tables Checks. The results of both of these assessments are shared with the Department for Education and with parents towards the end of the school year. Many thanks in advance for the on-going support you provide your children in ensuring they feel well equipped to face these tests. If you have any questions about either assessment, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Hertfordshire County Council Survey - Road Safety

Please see below a link that we have been forwarded from Herts County Council to a survey around road safety. This asks about routes used by children, traffic speeds and includes what would make journeys to school feel safer for those who chose to walk or cycle. The strategy itself has a goal to cut serious injury collisions involving children by 70%. We would appreciate it if you could take a moment to complete the survey.

Neurofibromatosis Awareness Day - 17th May

We have children in the school who suffer with this genetic condition so we just wanted to raise awareness of this condition.
