Message from Mrs Birch

Mrs Birch
Mrs Birch - Headteacher

This morning we were visited by the MP for Hemel Hempstead, David Taylor. He had been told about some of the great work carried out here as part of the Partnership for Inclusion of Neurodiversity in Schools (PINS) project and wanted to speak to us about this. Mrs Elsey (one of our SENDCos) and I spoke to him about our work to be a more inclusive school and he had the pleasure of joining some of our children in their sensory circuits activity. We absolutely love showing off the brilliant things we do here at Galley Hill and introducing our amazing children to outside visitors.

Relationship, Health and Sex Education

Many thanks to all of the parents who responded to our consultation regarding our Relationships Education curriculum at the end of the summer term. We really did appreciate you taking the time to look at it and respond. We received 61 responses in total and while some of the written comments stated that they felt that some aspects were taught too early, 84% agreed that content was being taught at an age-appropriate time.

If you do require further information about what is taught to the children and when, there are detailed plans on our website: Galley Hill Primary School and Nursery - Curriculum or your child’s class teacher will be able to talk you through what is covered in their particular year group.

For this year, sex education will be taught in Year 5 and Year 6 in the summer term. Parents will be given full information about exactly what is covered (with links to the materials), when the lessons are going to be taught and details about how to opt-out if preferred nearer the time.

Open Classrooms

As those of you who have been with us at Galley Hill in previous years will know, we hold a monthly open classrooms event. This is an informal opportunity for you to pop into your child’s classroom after school to have a look at their learning in their books and on display. Our first open classrooms event of this year will be taking place on Thursday 1st October, 3:15pm – 3:45pm. If you wish to attend, please wait for the staff to dismiss all of the children and then enter the classroom through the door that the children exit. While staff will usually be present within the classroom for a quick chat, this is not a time for a long discussion about your child’s progress or any concerns you might have. We do have parent consultations coming up on 14th and 15th October or you could make an appointment to meet the teacher at another time.

The Class Buzz!

Next week’s newsletter will have a slightly different look to usual. For this academic year, we will be sending out news from the classes, called ‘The Class Buzz’ approximately once a month. This will be a little update of the learning and opportunities that have been going on in each of the year groups. We hope that this will help you in talking to your children about what they have been doing at school. We know too many go home and say they have done nothing or cannot remember!
