Message from Mrs Birch

Mrs Birch
Mrs Birch - Headteacher

As a school, we believe strongly in our partnership with you as parents in ensuring that your child makes the very best progress in all aspects of their education. As such, thank you to all who were able to make it to our open classrooms event this week. We really hope you enjoyed the opportunity to have a look at your child’s most recent learning and discuss this with them. Similarly, we hope that you found last week’s ‘Class Buzz’ newsletter informative about what your child has recently been learning. Thank you to the teachers and to Mrs Sproat for compiling it. We look forward to sharing another edition with you in a few weeks.

Additionally, as you should already know, we have parent consultation evenings coming up on 14th and 15th October. This will be an opportunity for you to have a 1:1 appointment with your child’s class teacher to hear more about how they have settled and how they are getting on with their learning. Booking for these sessions is already open on Arbor. Please contact the school office if you have any difficulty with securing a space. We have tried to provide more earlier slots this year as we know that these are always the most popular.

Mobile Phones and Smart Watches

In line with national statutory guidance, we have recently been looking at our policy around mobile phones and smart watches. The only children who may wish to carry a mobile phone on the way to school are children in Years 5 or 6 who walk to and from school alone. These phones should be turned off and handed in at the school office as soon as the child arrives at school. We strongly recommend that parents look at alternatives to smart phones and closely monitor what their child is doing on their mobile phone.

Children at Galley Hill are not allowed to wear smart watches to school at any time.

Attendance at the Start of Term

Thank you to all families for supporting a positive start to the new school year. We were aware that a number of pupils were absent during the first few days of term due to family holidays. These early days are an important part of helping children settle into their new class, establish routines, build relationships and begin their learning journey for the year ahead. When planning future holidays, particularly for next September, please consider the considerable impact that missing the start of term can have on a child's transition and attendance. Thank you for your continued support.

World Mental Health Day

On Friday 9th October Galley Hill will be participating in World Mental Health Day, by holding class assemblies, discussions and completing a range of activities. We will also be raising awareness by joining in with YoungMinds' Hello Yellow Campaign. We are therefore inviting each child to come into school on that day wearing something yellow, on top of their usual school uniform, e.g. a pair of socks, a scarf, hairband, jumper etc. Staff will be getting involved as well!

If you would like further support with your child's mental health, or your own, please do look at the wellbeing page on our website for a range of resources and helpful websites. You can also read our parent guide here PowerPoint Presentation, speak to your child's class teacher, or Mrs Hewitt our Mental Health Lead, if you have any concerns.

Firework Display at Laureate Academy

On Thursday 22nd October from 5.00pm to 7.00pm, Laureate Academy will be hosting a Fireworks Event to celebrate both the opening of our fantastic new school building and the strong partnerships we enjoy with local primary schools across Dacorum.

As a school, we are incredibly proud to serve our local community, and we would love to welcome current primary-aged children and their families to join us for an evening of fireworks, food, activities and celebration.

The event will provide families with an opportunity to:

  • Enjoy a safe, family-friendly fireworks display
  • Visit our brand-new school building
  • Meet members of the Laureate Academy community
  • Find out more about the exciting opportunities available to students as they move towards secondary school

We are happy to share that families from Galley Hill can receive 50% tickets by using the code: GALLEYHILL50

Tickets can be purchased here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/laureate-academys-firework-night-tickets-2002622075537
