Message from Mrs Birch

Mrs Birch
Mrs Birch - Headteacher

At Galley Hill, reading is an absolute priority as this unlocks all other aspects of the curriculum. This year, we have been working with our local English Hub as a partner school to really focus support on early reading and phonics. Miss Walmsley has been doing an outstanding job of leading this and it is incredible to see the progress the children are making in this vital area of their learning. We are so grateful to all parents who regularly share books with their children at home as reading for pleasure is also so important for unlocking a child’s imagination. We are always also looking for volunteers who might be able to come into school to hear children read during the day. If you, or someone you know, might be able to volunteer to do this for a couple of hours each week, we would love to hear from you. Due to the nature of the work with children, we will need to carry out safeguarding checks on anyone coming forward. Please contact the school office if you think you might be able to help.

Sports Day

As you may have already seen from our calendar of events, our Sports Day for this year is taking place on Wednesday 1st July. This will be from 9:15am to 11:30am for children in Key Stages 1 and 2 (years 1 to 6) and from 1:30pm to 2:45pm for children in Early Years (Nursery and Reception). Parents will need to leave site between the two events if they are attending both.

As with previous years, we ask please that the children come to school on that day in their PE shorts and trainers with a top in the colour of their house if at all possible. The colours are:

Horowitz – Blue

Rowling – Green

Wilson – Yellow

Dahl – Red

If you are unsure which house your child is in, please speak to your child’s class staff and they will be able to let you know. Thank you in advance for your support with this.

Online Safety

Recently, all staff at Galley Hill have completed a refresher of our Online Safety training. I am sure you will all agree that this is a vital safeguarding aspect for both parents and teachers for our children but can feel very baffling! The company with whom we completed our training have a really useful website with lots of information for parents about different apps, games and websites. You can access the parent pages here: Parents & Carers - KIDSONLINEWORLD.COM.

Open Classrooms

A reminder that our next open classrooms event is taking place on Thursday (7th May) from 3:15pm to 3:45pm. This is the opportunity for you to pop into your child’s classroom to look at the learning in books and on the walls. If you wish to attend, please just enter through the door your child usually exits from once the teachers have finished dismissing the class.

Sharing Assembly

Also a reminder that Team Coral are presenting their learning in their sharing assembly on Thursday (7th May) at 2:45pm. Please come to the school office at that time if you wish to attend.

SEND parent coffee morning Friday 15th May at 9am.

A member of the ADD-vance team will be joining us to explain how they can support you and your family. Offering advice and support.

ADD-vance is a registered charity supporting families & professionals involved in the care of children with ADHD, Autism or a related condition in Hertfordshire. Their Specialist Coaches & Trainers run support groups, workshops, courses, training & coaching services.
