Teach: Today we are going to be continuing the ‘wh’ sound.

  1. Questions you may ask:
  • What sound did we look at yesterday?
  • Revisit what sound does ‘wh’ make? (Remind children that it is a digraph and what does this mean?)
  • The sound they already know is ‘w’ – remind them both ‘w’ ‘wh’ make the same sound.

  • Explain to children today they are going to write words with the sound ‘wh’ in it.
  • Model words – whistle, where, whip, wheel, whale, whisper.

Practise: Children to complete the attached worksheet. The worksheet attached will include some words that do not have the ‘wh’ sound. Children need to say the word of the picture and identify whether it contains the ‘wh’ sound and they have to write the ‘wh’ word in the worksheets.

Apply: Children to write the sentence. They may need modelling.

Examples of model sentences: a. Witch with the whistle. b. A whale with a large tail. c. Where were you?
