Opal Class Blog
Welcome to Opal Class Blog
Our class blog will be updated each half term, so keep a close eye on what we have all been up to.
English
We have been very busy in the first half term of the school year! We read about the Snow Dragon and we made beautiful dragons for our display.
We read about the Amazon River and learnt about writing a report. We thought about what features should be included in our own writing then we wrote reports on different aspects of the river.
We used our investigation skills to learn about the life of Stevie Wonder for Black History Month and we made a fact file about his amazing career and life.
We finished the half term by reading poetry. We read the Saltmarsh Dragon and discussed the use of adjectives to create a picture in our minds. We worked hard on punctuating speech, using the poem as a basis.
Maths
We started the year looking at place value and we used the knowledge that we gained to help us with our understanding of addition and subtraction. We began by using two-digit numbers and worked our way up to four-digit numbers.
Science
We have been looking at states of matter. We spent time investigating solids, liquids and gasses. We tested the viscosity of four different liquids by putting them on a table and timing which one reached the edge first.
We weighed fizzy drinks, then shook them to get the bubbles out before weighing them again. We compared the start and end weights and were able to determine whether the air had a mass or not.
We also looked at the water cycle during this topic. We made our own version of the water cycle using a plastic bag and some water.
Art
In Art, we have been looking at the sculptor Marisol Escobar. We spent time planning and sketching our own sculptures and then made them out of clay before painting them,
Geography
We have been comparing our home town of Hemel Hempstead with Central America. We looked at both physical and human geography and we were surprised by some of the similarities and the differences too.
